I literally am so pumped for the Iron Bowl this week, that I wrote this little poem to the rhyme of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Enjoy!!! Let the Iron Bowl fun begin.
Twas the week of the Iron Bowl when all through the state
Each fan base was prepping for a game between greats.
Good luck charms were hung by the bedside with care
In hopes that their team would win at Jordan Hare.
The children were tucked into bed each night
Wearing favorite team colors and dreaming of the fight.
The fight on the Plains between #1 and #4
This will be a game making history for sure.
When outside my window there rose such a clatter
I sprang from my lazy boy to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash
Paused ESPN Classics where I was watching Auburn’s “Miracle” pass.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But a caravan of RVs full of spirit and cheer.
A week before the Iron Bowl and they were on their way
To save a coveted spot for the beloved game day.
Grab the markers and posterboard and head to Jordan Hare
because ESPN’s College Gameday kicks off the morning there.
The signs must be creative to get time on TV.
I’m daydreaming now of what I may see.
Go Tre! Go AJ! War Eagle! Roll Tide!
On Marshall! On Yeldon! Each sign made with pride.
For Lee Corso’s pick, all eyes are stuck
Some think his choice is a curse, where others think it’s good luck.
This Iron Bowl will be, the best challenge yet
For an offense and defense that are statistically the best.
Will Bama’s #1 defense will be ready to tame
the nearly 320 yards Auburn rushes each game?
In order to compete with the tide, some Alabama fans say
“Auburn will have to throw the ball, they can’t just run all day”
But Bama fans, this is only a gentle reminder of merely a week ago,
But it was a pass, not a run, that sent many a bulldogs whimpering home.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard a few knocks,
to the door I ran and outside lay a small box.
I tore the box open, joy filling my soul
I was finally holding my tickets to the 2013 Iron Bowl.
I’m nervously awaiting the arrival of my husband
So I can sweetly tell of how much I just cost him.
It may by my Christmas present for the next 1o years,
but worth every penny to sit on the 50 and cheer, cheer, cheer!
The air is filled with rivalry this week
From the colors you wear to the words that you speak.
For those not from around here, you may never understand
the passion, the fervor, the excitement in each fan.
Pre-game handshakes between Gus and Saban won’t be seen
as they’ll be on their respective sidelines charting their the plan to victory.
The eagle will fly and it will make grown men cry
While Alabama fans are chanting Roll Tide! Roll Tide!
My heart is already pounding as the clock ticks down
The energy is palpable all across town.
It’s time to get focused for a year of bragging rights
Happy Iron Bowl Week to all, and to all a Goodnight!
