Twas the Week of the Iron Bowl

Posted on

I really enjoy writing these each year. Here is to another Iron Bowl.

Twas the week of the Iron Bowl and all through the state
Each fan base was prepping for a game between greats.
Good luck traditions were preached by many
In hopes that their team would win at Bryant Denny

The children were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of touch downs danced in their heads.
The state is divided between the Tide & AU
With everyone wearing their Crimson & White or Orange & Blue

When outside my window there rose such a clatter
I sprang from my lazy boy to see what was the matter
Away to the window I flew like a flash
Paused ESPN Classics where I was watching Davis’ One Second Dash

When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But a caravan of RV’s full of spirit and cheer
A week before the Iron Bowl and they were on their way
To save a coveted spot for the beloved Game Day

I don’t care that CBS decided to stroll
To the town of Oxford for a little game called the Egg Bowl
ESPN Game Day sure knew who was best
They picked the rivalry that’s better than the rest

The Coaches and Coordinators are pacing the field pre-game
And they whistled and shouted calling each player by name
Now Marshall, Now Sammie,
Now Sims and Yeldon
On Amari and Henry,
On Uzomah and Cameron
They had focus in their eyes and precision throws
Now dash away, dash away into the End Zone

This Iron Bowls a bit different than the last we’d seen
Instead of #1 vs 4, It’s #1 vs 15

To Tide fans playing in T-town is like Heaven
But Auburn fans grin because in Tuscaloosa they’ve won 5 of 7
As the road team having the record that’s best
You now see why, Auburn fans call it Jordan-Hare of the west

When it comes to the best rivalry it’s the Iron Bowl hands down
Sorry Ohio State – Michigan you just don’t win this crown
You may have the hype and pageantry
But In-state rivals you will never be

From Punt Bama Punt in the early seventies
To a decade of Alabama and Bear Bryant victories
You have the 2010 Cam-comeback in the 2nd Half
That sent Auburn on their way to be SEC Champs

Just 2 years later Alabama was the hero
As they scored 49, and holding Auburn to Zero
Last year marked one of the greatest of greats
When Coach Saban asked for one second back, ultimately sealing his fate

As we spring to our feet yelling go team go
It may be War Eagle or Roll Tide Roll
This week will test every relationship
Frinds become enemies and families are split

My heart is pounding as the clock ticks down
The energy is palpable all across town
It’s time to get focused for a year of bragging rights
Happy Iron Bowl Week to all and to all a Goodnight!
