A letter to my one month old son

Posted on Updated on

Dear son,

You are a blessing and true joy. When you entered this world one month ago our lives forever changed. The doctor announced “it’s a boy” and I was overwhelmed with excitement, then stunned with the thought of raising a man. My heart grew the day you were born and continues to expand with every passing minute. You are so loved, son, from mommy and daddy, to your sister, and all your grandparents. There is no shortage of affection.

As you grow up, I pray your life is one that chases truth and what is best in this world. May you be a boy defined by stellar behavior: selfless, kind, joyful, loving, patient, adventurous. As you grow out of boyhood, I pray you are respectful, polite, bold, courageous and full of life. As a man, strive to be an example to those around you, stand for what is right, look to those things that are good, and surround yourself with men that are wiser than you.

I’m not going to sugar coat it, son, this world is not always kind to us, people aren’t perfect, and life can be downright hard at times. Despite the challenges, you are responsible for how you respond the cards life deals us. Through your eyes you can choose to see the world different. By your hands you can do great things. Your mouth will have the chance to utter words that can have profound impacts. Your feet can forge new paths and lead to a powerful influence.

I don’t know what you’ll be when you grow up, if/where you’ll attend college, where you’ll live as an adult, who you’ll marry, or if you’ll have kids. But, what I do know is that your mom and dad will be here to support you, love you, and guide you through all of life’s decisions. You may only be one month old today, but I already think you’re a rock star.

From baby days, to the boy years and on into manhood please know I am so excited to see who you become. The journey will be marked with band aids and bruises, maybe even some broken bones but it will also include adventures and awesome memories.

You are our special man. We love you! Happy one month Birthday!

~Love, mommy & daddy
